How to make a sink in the bathroom with a countertop
Sink with countertop: benefits
The sink equipped with a table-top is tight. It is very easy to care for her. This design does not take area. On the contrary, it allows you to more rationally equip the bathroom.
Homemade countertops easy to mount in place. You can make the design so that the sewer pipe does not interfere with installation. You can choose for the countertop those sizes that will make its use as convenient as possible. For a small room there will be enough worktop 50-60 cm wide. If the bathroom is more spacious, the width of the worktop can easily reach 80 cm or more.
There is a drawback of a homemade countertop: a home craftsman is usually organic in choosing the shape of such a product. The countertop of a complex shape can be done by a craftsman of drywall, but it will be extremely difficult to sheathe it with facing material. Therefore, it is best to limit the design with simple contours.
Types of construction of sink tops
Structurally, tabletops are divided into several main types:
- solid cast construction;
- built-in sink;
- consignment washbasin.
In the first case, the countertop and washbasin become one. This model has the best hygienic characteristics. In the second case, the sink is located separately, in a special hole. With an overhead washbasin, the sink turns into a desktop product. To perform a large hole is not required, you only need a pass for summarizing communications.
For a small room, the countertop of the mounted type would be ideal, under which you can easily arrange drawers or hide a small-sized washing machine.
Materials for the manufacture of countertops: how to make a choice
Different types of materials are widely used for washing tables: natural and artificial stone; glass; drywall; MDF; tree.
The attractive design of the tabletop will provide glass: it fits perfectly into any interior and is suitable for rooms of different sizes. The glass tabletop will be airy and visually weightless. Cons: for the table top you can use only thick glass. Processing such material at home is extremely difficult.The glass table under the sink requires careful daily care: after each hand wash, dried water droplets will be visible on the glass surface.
The original appearance will give the sink a tabletop made of wood. Larch is best suited for this purpose: it contains a special resin that protects the wood from fungus and decay. But even in this case, the design will need to be thoroughly impregnated with antiseptic compounds. Caring for a wooden table top takes a lot of time.
The most popular in the manufacture of countertops with their own hands will be MDF or drywall. Products from such materials are considered the most budget. Using drywall for the base of the table, you can choose a sink of any configuration and size. When facing gypsum plasterboard with insulating materials, it is possible to achieve imitation of the surface texture under natural materials.
The disadvantage of drywall is that this material is afraid of moisture. If you choose laminated plates, there is a risk of water getting into the corner and side sections of the structure. The life of the plasterboard is significantly lower than that of a stone.But in general, this material can be considered the most suitable for the manufacture of countertops with their own hands.
Before starting work
The house master should remember that the tabletop of plasterboard in the bathroom will not last for a long time, because this material is not able to withstand moisture. Home-made production of granite or acrylic stone at home is very difficult: this design is best ordered in the workshop. If you decide to stay on drywall, it will need to revet tile or glass mosaic.
For the manufacture of countertops you will need:
- a set of tools for working with metal and plasterboard;
- metal profile guides;
- bearing elements (wood, metal);
- self-tapping screws.
Manufacturing of gypsum board
At a height of about 800 mm from the floor level, draw a horizontal line. At this level there will be a guide profile. Along this line it is necessary to form the contour of the tabletop in the form of a time frame on the support.
Cut out the base of the tabletop from a suitable-sized piece of drywall. Carefully draw the sink contour on it.Using a jigsaw, cut a hole.
To cut a hole under the countertop, the easiest way is to place the sink in the center of the table upside down, and then cut a pencil around the contour. It will be necessary to discard a half or two centimeters from the resulting size around the perimeter. If wooden parts are used in the construction, they should be carefully treated with emery paper (especially from the sides) and then primed.
Build a metal frame. Attach the bottom sheet of drywall to it. Now you can go to the manufacture of rigid supports future worktops. Along the edges of the resulting cutout, lay out the carrier profiles. They will give the structure rigidity and provide a place for mounting the lower supports. All elements are attached to the drywall with screws.
Proceed to the manufacture of support elements. Vertical guides should be at least two-thirds the width of the tabletop. Similar guides should be screwed onto the wall also vertically. The third guide will be closing, it will connect the faces of the triangle. You should have a complete brace that can withstand a considerable load. Two such elements will be located on either side of the notch.Now the framework needs to be sheathed in front with a gypsum board or a gypsum-fiber board.
Above the braces install two more bearing metal profiles. Screw to them the top sheet of drywall. Sheathe all ends of the structure. Now the tabletop has found the desired look. Fasten the sink inserted into the countertop. The hole between the table and the sink must be filled with sanitary sealant. After some time, it will harden and securely fix the sink in its place. You can use the sink in about a day.
The choice of cladding for tabletops
Two types of materials are suitable for cladding plasterboard countertops: tiles and mosaic of glass or ceramics. The choice is determined by your taste and features of the bathroom. Harmonious must be not only the color of the material, but also the size of the cladding elements: tile or mosaic must be combined with the width of the seams. From a practical point of view, it is more convenient to care for the surface in which the seams will be smaller: they are most susceptible to contamination.
When facing a tile with a tile, the outer side of a gypsum plasterboard structure is covered with waterproof glue.If there is a protective layer on the tile, it should be moistened and removed beforehand. By gluing the tiles, the elements are pressed to the surface and for some time held in this position.
Completely avoid the seams at the joints of the tiles will not succeed. But they can be veiled. For this purpose, apply moisture-resistant grout and a special rubber spatula (squeegee).
