Q. Sometimes when I wake up from a dream, I'm full of emotion for a person I haven't seen in a long time, like an old boyfriend. Does this mean that I still have feelings for him?
Sometimes when I wake up from a dream, I'm full of emotion for a person I haven't seen in a long time, like an old boyfriend. Does this mean that I still have feelings for him?
Not necessarily. The areas of our brains associated with memory are very active during dreaming sleep, says Deirdre Barrett, PhD, a psychology professor at Harvard University. What's more, everyone you've ever been close to in your life is stored in your memory, which is why they sometimes star in your nighttime reveries. But that doesn't mean they're relevant to your current life. "Sometimes feelings about someone in your present--your husband, for instance--are represented by another person in a dream," says Dr. Barrett. Only your waking self can analyze whether those lingering feelings are really about that old boyfriend or not.
