The Only Bikini Trends Worth Knowing About
Next up on our agenda? The big bikini trends for 2019. You know the drill: Your summer holiday feels like miles off, but as we’ll tell you around this time every year, nowis the time to snap up those bikinis—especially if you’re relying on the high street.
We like to think that we’re pretty generous in the giving stakes here at Who What Wear; we’ve already shared our ultimate guide to the best swimwear for every body shape and pinpointed the one style that’s certain to look good on everyone. And we’ve even revealed the one giveaway that makes swimwear look cheap.
This season is definitely about which tribe you fall into. Blame it on Bella (of Hadid fame, who else?) if you find yourself gravitating towards high-leg bottoms that Cindy Crawford and co. would have sported in the ’90s. Unapologetic and not for the faint-hearted, they’re ideal for hip joints seeking a little sun.
On the opposite end of the scale, hipster lovers will be pleased to hear that this year has ushered in a minimalistic, almost sports-inspired simplicity to separates. No frills, no flounces—just straight, supportive lines that would be appropriate post-summer down your local leisure centre—in a good way.
Then there’s the little niche movements to consider: Crochet lovers will rejoice, as the technique has become more prolific across styles to suit all budgets, while Hunza G’s one-size-fits-all crinkle fabric is set to dominate your Instagram feed once more.

If you like your clothes to have a touch of minimalism, then celebrate the fact that your bikini can have a dose of that, too. Functional shapes in clean cuts and block colourways are the perfect antidote to all things embellished and boho. We love the simplicity of Lucy Williams’s Love Stories set.
Weekday (£12) and (£8)
& Other Stories (£19) and (£19)
This old knitting technique instantly evokes that summer holiday feeling. Crochet feels soft on skin and only ever gets better with age. We love Kiwi model Zippora Seven’s vintage-inspired two-piece complete with floral adornment.
We’re still dreaming of a Marysia bikini, as sported by über-blogger Chiara Ferragni. Luckily the high street has got in on the action again this summer with scallop homages aplenty, but you’ll have to be quick…
Last year saw Hunza G collaborate with multitasking blogger Pandora Sykes, and boom! You couldn’t move for those crinkly two-pieces peppering your Instagram feed. With a cult following and plenty more styles out for 2019, this one-size-fits-all wonder fabric is set to enjoy even more popularity.
After more than a decade of hipster cuts dominating the mainstream, Bella Hadid’s fondness for bottoms that graze her waist look like an alien concept. But if you’ve got it (the confidence that is), now is certainly the time to flaunt it. Let’s not leave this trend for supermodels only to try.
Amuse Society (£39) and (£35)
Missguided (£8) and (£12)
A little ruching, a dash of high-shine and a buckle here or there,et voilà: you're nodding to a bygone era in a subtly chic way. We’re obsessed with how Jeanne Damas nailed this movement in a two-piece.
Heidi Klein (£95) and (£95)
