The Tempest at the Met Opera: Contemporary Composer Thomas Adès' Debut
It's time for a Shakespeare fix: contemporary classical music guru Thomas Adès bringsThe Tempestto the Metropolitan Opera stage, premiering today, October 23, 2012. This is one of the rare occasions that a living composer takes to the opera, made even more significant since this is Adès' debut at the Met. Shakespeare's fantastical epic tale stars baritone Simon Keenlyside and is co-directed BY Robert Lepage, who has refashioned the interior of an 18th century La Scala opera house.
Keenlyside will take the stage as the sorcery-indulgent and exiled Duke of Milan, Prospero, whilst wearing a magical reflective cape that somewhat resembles a mirror in splinters. Costume designer Kym Barrett has created costumes that represent the role of the character — the spirit Ariel, played by Audrey Luna, wears a skeletal-like design.
If you do not yet have tickets toThe Tempest, you're not out of luck: the Met's Live in HD series will screen the November 10 matinee performance at 1,900 movie theaters in 64 countries around the globe.
The Tempest premieres October 23, 2012, and runs through November 17, 2012, at the Metropolitan Opera.
